TUESDAY PUZZLE — This is a day of celebrations hither in the Wordplay column! First, we're celebrating Lisa Senzel's auspicious New York Times Crossword debut, a fabulous puzzle that she made with the veteran constructor Jeff Chen. According to Mr. Chen's site, XWord Info, Ms. Senzel is the 17th constructor to debut in 2022.

We're also celebrating the forthcoming publication of Mr. Chen's newest puzzle book, "The Best Puzzle Book for Adults," which contains crosswords, give-and-take searches, cryptograms, encephalon teasers and more. I was lucky enough to go an advance copy, and I've enjoyed the range of difficulties and puzzle varieties that Mr. Chen has advisedly curated.

And finally, we're jubilant the subject of this puzzle from Ms. Senzel and Mr. Chen. I'll say more than almost information technology later a quick review of the tougher clues in this relatively easy Tuesday grid.

14A. The "Eye layer containing the iris" is the UVEA, which appears fairly regularly in crossword puzzles because of its conveniently loftier ratio of vowels to consonants.

23A. "NOM de plume" is the French term for "pen proper name," as in, "Sometimes I write these columns nether the NOM de plume Bodega Cat."

43A. When a clue has a question mark, there is some sort of wordplay involved. In this instance, "No power?" is a punny clue for VETO, which is not a power outage but the ability to say no (to legislation, for case).

46A. I know I'm not the but one who tried to squeeze "kidney" in for the clue "What nephology is the study of." It turns out that I misread "nephology" for "nephrology," which is the study of kidneys. Nephology is the study of CLOUDS.

68A. I've recently been on a real LIZZO kick, and then I was thrilled to run into the lyrical clue "'I put the sing in unmarried' singer."

71A. When a clue is in brackets, as this i is, information technology indicates that the inkling or entry is nonverbal, like an action or a sound. In this case, the clue "[Wrong answer!]" indicates a sound: the BZZT sound of a game show cablegram when a contestant answers incorrectly.

2D. The "Pop culture site created as a supplement to The Onion" is the AV CLUB, which is at present independent of The Onion. Interestingly, the crossword puzzle that was created as a supplement to the AV CLUB is at present a fabulous independent crossword publication chosen the American Values Order crossword, and you lot should absolutely check information technology out.

59D. We've got another wordplay clue here (see the question mark). "Soda'southward pop?" sounds every bit if it'due south about the father of soda, but instead it'south about the popular sound that soda makes, which is FIZZ.

62D. If y'all aren't a "Popeye" fan, you may not know that "Popeye's Olive" (his romantic interest) spells her last name as OYL rather than "oil." This 1 comes upward a lot, so exist certain to tuck it abroad for future solves!

Bon MARDI GRAS, anybody! This puzzle is a celebration of the BIG EASY (or should I say the big E-Z?). It's blimp to the gills with theme content about New Orleans, including a whopping 10 entries related to the city, too equally four thematically shaded squares in the southwest and southeast corners.

The New Orleans content kicks off right away at 1D with GUMBO ("Cajun stew"). And the good times roll all the way to 70D with OLD, as in, "___ Foursquare (translation of 'Vieux Carré')". This clue might be a fleck of a stretch — Onetime in and of itself is not particularly New Orleans and feels a tad capricious — but the rest of the theme entries sparkle with NOLA energy. My favorites are probably BOURBON STREET ("Main drag of the French Quarter") and ÉTOUFFÉE ("Cajun shellfish-over-rice dish").

To top it all off, nosotros take the E'southward and Z'due south in the bottom corners to become along with the revealer at 56A, Large Easy ("Nickname for New Orleans, historic by the answers to the starred clues and suggested by the shaded squares").

This puzzle has an unbelievable 73 theme squares, out of a total of 225. That'south nearly a third of the whole puzzle! The nonstandard "mirror" (left-correct) symmetry of this filigree was likely necessary to conform so very many theme entries, many of which were not of symmetrical lengths (i.eastward., they could not be formed into sets of same-length pairs, which is necessary for rotational symmetry).

Nothing says MARDI GRAS like over-the-height celebrations, and this puzzle, with its fire hose of theme content, is zippo if not an over-the-top celebration of New Orleans!

Lisa Senzel: I pictured a grid with a big East and Z — like to Sean Yamada-Hunter's debut puzzle, "That's a Big IF," filled with E-ZPass, Eazy-East, Yeezy and lots of Z'south like Trenton Charlson's puzzle "Snoozefest," with New Orleans every bit the revealer. Jeff suggested we bring our theme city to life, and he designed the filigree. As many have noted, Jeff is great to work with. If you haven't washed his New York Times Super Mega puzzle from Dec, it's amazing. I've had wonderful crossword mentors: Thanks so much, Will Nediger, Christina Iverson and Jake Halperin. I clued NORA equally Nora McInerny, host of "Terrible, Thanks for Asking," my favorite podcast (two meg downloads a month). My XWord Info photograph shows the giant '90s crossword that I brought in from my garage when the pandemic started. I've survived the onslaught of tsetses and tsars, and I'm well-nigh done. I promise the pandemic is, too.

Jeff Chen: Information technology's non only a Big Due east-Z working with Lisa, simply a large pleasure. 2 of the most important qualities in new constructors are an ability to listen and procedure feedback, and the dedication to grind through the hard work. Lisa is so exemplary in both of those areas; as far from a BZZT from me as possible.

It's such a delight to assist someone then deserving make her debut today.

Almost finished solving only need a bit more help? We've got you lot covered.
